McDonald referenced high fashion photos for the hair and makeup, like Chanel’s Spring 2013 Couture show for Wednesday’s Rave’N look. For her everyday makeup, Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation in Porcelain was applied with a Beautyblender for a sheer application and to let Ortega’s natural freckles show through. For the lips, MAC’s Nightmoth Lip Pencil was custom mixed with Dr. PawPaw Balm to make the shade less opaque, and her lashes were coated with the Best of Beauty-winning Ilia Limitless Lash in Soft Black.
For her Rave’N look — where we see Wednesday perform that now-iconic dance number in a black gown that separates her in a sea of students wearing white — Ortega’s skin was cleansed with Koh Gen Doh Spa Water and moisturized with Weleda Skin Food Light. To prep the lips, Elizabeth Arden’s 8-Hour Cream was mixed with sugar to gently exfoliate.
For the skin to appear completely matte, a DHC Foundation was applied heavier than usual for this scene with a damp blender and Make Up For Ever Translucent Powder was added all over the skin. Ortega’s freckles were accentuated (because the set lighting washed them out) using the Lime Crime Freckle Pen in Mocha, though McDonald noted they were still barely noticeable. Her cheeks were hollowed out using MAC Sculpt and MAC Shadowy Lady.
For the eyes, Ortega’s lashes were curled with a Dior Lash Curler, then Urban Decay Primer Potion was applied to the lids to help prevent fallout. MAC Brule Eyeshadow was used as a warm light beige base, then Urban Decay Cowboy Rick from the Naked Wild West Mini Palette, a peach shade with a sparkle finish, was added over Brule. For a grunge-inspired black smokey eye, Chanel Splendeur et Audace #3 and Chanel Quiet Revolution #4 from the 306 and 312 palettes respectively were buffed into the lid. Nightmoth was used again on the outer corners of the lips for definition and Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream was applied as a gloss. Micropore surgical tape was used to cover a piercing on Ortega’s right ear.
At the Rave’N, McDonald kept Wednesday’s signature braids and wrapped them on top of her head milkmaid-style, similar to an Alexa Chung photo she found. A Shu Uemura serum was applied to the bangs during Ortega’s blowout and Ecogel was used to control flyaways from the three wefts of hair extensions added to her hair; it was all set with got2b hairspray.
