Meet Cute (2022)

Peacock — September 21

Kayley Cuoco and Pete Davidson star in this romantic comedy on Peacock, one of the best new streaming movies to watch this week. Sheila and Gary seem perfect for each other. After a chance encounter, it looks like love at first sight. But it’s not. At least not for Sheila, who has been using a time machine to relive a perfect date. When that gets old, she goes further back, hoping to shape Gary into an even better match for herself.

Lou (2022)

Netflix — September 23

Academy Award-winning actress Allison Janney stars alongside Jurnee Smollett in this Netflix thriller directed by Anna Foerster and produced by J.J. Abrams. When a neighbor’s daughter is kidnapped during a storm, A loner has to face her own dark past in her quest to help find the girl and bring her home to safety.

On the Come Up (2022)

Paramount Plus — September 23

Paramount Plus brings us a moving underdog story with this original title, one of the best new streaming movies of the week. In On the Come Up, a teen girl dreams of becoming one of the best rappers of all time, but an eviction notice and trouble at home threaten to take her chance away.

Section 8 (2022)

AMC Plus — September 23

If you’re looking for a gritty action movie reminiscent of the genre’s 80s and 90s heyday, look no further than Section 8, co-starring action legend Dolph Lundgren. A former soldier goes to prison when he avenges the murder of his wife and child. He’s offered his freedom in exchange for working for a shadowy government organization and starts taking off-the-books assignments. But he soon realizes Section 8 may not be what it seems.

Sidney (2022)

Apple TV Plus — September 23

Iconic actor, filmmaker, and activist Sidney Poitier is in the spotlight in this new documentary premiering on Apple TV Plus. Featuring interviews with Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Halle Berry, and more, the film offers an intimate look at Poitier’s life, career, and legacy.

All About My Mother (1999)

Freevee has a lot of titles from Spanish master Pedro Almodóvar streaming for free starting this week. Perhaps the best of these is All About My Mother. When she loses her son, a grief-stricken mother travels to the town where she last saw his father. There, she takes on a maternal role to a small community of women, helping her explore her own identity as a mother.

The American (2010)

Hulu — September 1

Largely ignored when it came out, The American is a terrific slow-burn thriller starring George Clooney, and it’s one of the best new streaming movies this week. An assassin lays low in a small Italian town, waiting to complete an assignment. Things get complicated when he meets a woman and must evade another killer who is after him.

Clueless (1995)

Netflix — September 1

A teen romcom classic based on Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless follows Cher Horowitz, a teen match-maker who can find everyone’s perfect person. After making over a desperate new student and helping her fit in, Cher starts to look for a match for herself in this coming-of-age comedy from director Amy Heckerling.

Timecrimes (2007)

Plex — September 1

Nacho Vigalondo’s chilling 2007 sci-fi thriller is streaming free on Plex, and it’s one of the best new streaming movies this week. A man thinks he may have witnessed an assault from his back yard. When he goes to investigate, he finds himself in a timeloop, with the mystery pulling him deeper and deeper into the supposed crime.

We’re All Going To The World’s Fair (2021)

HBO Max — September 1

A teenager isolates herself in her attic, playing an immersive horror game in this critically acclaimed horror indie from first-time feature filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun. As she’s pulled deeper into the game, the teen documents the changes possibly happening to her in the real world as the lines between reality and fiction, dreaming and consciousness all blur.

Elvis (2022)

HBO Max — September 2

A bizarre but engrossing portrait of the King of Rock and Roll, Baz Luhrman’s Elvis is a chaotic ride, exploring the life of an icon. Told from the perspective of Elvis Presley’s manager, Col. Tom Parker, the film celebrates and emulates the King’s larger-than-life presence, racing through the major beats of his life and career at a mile a minute.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021)

Prime Video — September 6

Jenny Slate’s viral videos about an anthropomorphic shell (with shoes on) comes to the big screen in this heartfelt mockumentary about family and belonging. When Marcel the Shell becomes an online celebrity due to a documentarian’s interest, he hopes it may mean he’ll be able to find his family among the throngs of adoring fans.

Petite Maman (2021)

Hulu — September 6

A beautiful meditation on family, grief, and the passage of time from the director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Petite Maman follows a young girl who bonds with a new neighbor who looks just like her. The girl is in fact (and impossibly) her mother at her age, and the two develop a friendship as the girl copes with the death of her grandmother in this French fantasy drama, streaming on Hulu.

End of the Road (2022)

Netflix — September 8

Queen Latifah and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges star in this road trip thriller streaming on Netflix. A recent widow takes her family out to the New Mexico desert to start life anew. Soon, they have to work together and fight for their lives as they become the targets of a mysterious killer.

Flight/Risk (2022)

Prime Video — September 8

Two Boeing 737 Max planes crashed only just months apart in 2018 and 2019, spelling tragedy for the survivors left to mourn the unthinkable. This documentary recounts the events and their aftermath, focusing on the stories of affected family members, their legal teams, whistleblowers, and Pulitzer-winning journalist Dominic Gates. A powerful look at grief and justice, Flight/Risk is one of the best new streaming movies to check out this week.

Pinocchio (2022)

Disney Plus — September 8

An animated Disney classic comes to life — with quite a bit of help from some cutting-edge CGI — in this mostly live-action retelling, one of the best new streaming movies this week on Disney Plus. Tom Hanks stars as the woodcarver Geppetto, who builds himself a son out of wood. But Pinocchio wishes to be a real boy and sets out on an adventure with his loyal companion Jiminy Cricket, in the hopes of making his dreams come true.

Aline (2022)

Prime Video — September 9

Québécois pop star and global sensation Céline Dion gets the biopic treatment in this unauthorized portrait of her life and career. “Aline Dieu” is a small-town girl with the voice of an angel who rises through the ranks of the music industry to become an icon in this peculiar but engrossing film.

The Last Duel (2021)

Hulu — September 14

Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator director Ridley Scott helms this stunning period drama, written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. Set in Medieval France, The Last Duel chronicles a trial by combat. When a knight accuses his lifelong friend, a squire, of raping his wife, the two engage in a duel to settle the matter. The story is restaged from the perspectives of the three central characters, calling into question historical narratives and the treatment of women in this powerful tale.

Do Revenge (2022)

Netflix — September 16

Do Revenge stars Riverdale’s Camila Mendes and Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke. The black comedy, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, sees two unlikely allies teaming up to enact revenge on their high school foes. A dethroned queen bee and a shy new girl see the perfect opportunity to get back at their enemies by swapping targets to avoid suspicion.

Goodnight Mommy (2022)

Prime Video — September 16

An American remake of the 2014 Austrian psychological horror film of the same name, Goodnight Mommy is one of the best new streaming movies to check out this week. Two twin brothers head to their mother’s country home where they find her covered in bandages following cosmetic surgery. As her behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the boys begin to suspect the woman may not be their mother after all. 

I Think We’re Alone Now (2018)

Hulu — September 16

When a global pandemic wipes out most of the Earth’s population, two survivors must learn to live together. Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning star in this apocalyptic romance drama that gained a small following after the CODID-19 pandemic emerged, forcing certain parallels.

The Outfit (2022)

Prime Video — September 16

Mark Rylance stars in this thriller about an expert English taylor who gets caught up in the business dealings of a mob family. During one fateful night, he’ll have to use his wits to stay one step ahead and stay alive.

The Witch (2015)

Plex — September 17

A modern horror classic, Robert Eggers’s feature directorial debut The Witch is a haunting and gorgeous folk horror film. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a teen girl in 1600s New England. isolated with her family in a remote area near a mysterious forest, she is accused of witchcraft, slowly losing the trust of her family, which in turn begins to unravel under the weight of its own fears.
