This post was first published April 4, 2017. I have added a few details and republished it here to make it easier for new readers to find. This essential oil sachet tutorial makes the perfect DIY project for this time of year and is especially useful to include in with your sweater storage.
Lavender Sachet DIY Tutorial
Sachets are an old secret my grandmother taught me for keeping linens smelling great and safe from moths. In the old days they were often filled with dried lavender flowers. This new version I made is much easier and you don’t have to worry about spilling flower buds everywhere. These DIY essential oil sachets for drawers and closets smell great, make you feel great, and protect your linens from moths and musty smells all at the same time!
Scented Drawer Sachets Supplies Needed:
- Cotton Rounds
- Essential Oils- Lavender and Lime work well
- Small Organza Bags (you can substute a muslin bag but these can be found at the craft store or etsy shops)
I chose these simple supplies because they make this DIY lavender sachet so easy and they work so well in dresser drawers.
Instead of using essential oils and cotton rounds, you could choose to use organic lavender buds. While dry lavender is lovely too, I find that the lavender scent is just stronger and more effective from the concentrated essential oils.
You can, of course, chose to make your own draw string sachet bags from scratch with muslin or linen fabric and beautiful lavender ribbon. In fact it is a great little sewing project for scrap fabric. However, I wanted to keep this a simple craft accessible for everyone to make sachets without sewing. That’s why I used an organza lavender bag (here is my affiliate Amazon link) to make my homemade lavender sachets.
How To Make Sachets With Essential Oils:
Grab your supplies and head to a counter. Start with your cotton rounds and essential oils. (I always choose to use Young Living because they are 100% pure and are very concentrated so a little goes a long way!) They also have a beautiful, natural, clean scent.
I placed 3 drops of Lavender on one cotton round and 3 drops of Lime on another cotton round for my linen drawer. Depending on the size of your drawer or closet, you can add a few drops more. For my walk in closet, I used 10 drops of essential oil on each cotton round.
You may think I chose lavender essential oil because it smells so good and you’d be partially right. That is certainly important to me but I also like that lavender has relaxing aromatherapy qualities and antibacterial properties. What’s more? I chose lavender essential oil because it is a natural bug repellent and so great for keeping moths and spiders away. Lime essential oil is also thought to be effective fore repelling bugs, particularly spiders.
Once you have added the oils to your cotton rounds, grab a sachet bag and place your cotton rounds inside through the open side of the pouch. Cinch it up and hang on a hanger or place on a closet shelf! That’s it! Easy right? Plus, they look cute. That is a nifty little bonus of the pretty organza bags. That and they provide the perfect solution to how to make lavender sachets without sewing.
Uses For Homemade Lavender Sachet Drawer Fresheners
These lavender drawer sachets are perfect for everything from the sock drawer to the bath towel drawer or the linen shelf. They are the perfect way to freshen scents, kill bacteria, and repel bugs. Another great thing about these lavender sachets is that they are easy to refresh. You can just add a few drops of essential oils every month to provide your drawers with a fresh hint of fragrance. And you don’t have to worry about dried lavender blooms spilling or getting old!
I hope you enjoyed learning to make your own lavender sachets. These lavender sachet bags would be great little additions to Easter baskets (for tweens/teens) since Easter is around the corner! You can even place one of these beautiful sachets inside your pillow case as a great way to make sleep inviting and have sweet dreams.
Now you know how to make scented sachets with essential oils. If you want to try some different scents with your handmade sachets, here are some other essential oil combinations that smell nice in closets. I think these are the best essential oils for sachets because they also work as bug and moth repellent:
- Lemon and Peppermint
- Orange and Lavender
- Cedarwood and Spearmint
- Tea Tree and Rosemary
Individual sachets make a unique gift and are great for young people setting up their first homes and learning about drawer organization.
