Houston Chronicle taps Sewing as news columnist

Joy Sewing

The Houston Chronicle has appointed Joy Sewing to the post of news columnist, a role in which she will report on topics, including social justice, politics, education, health care and inequity.

Sewing will be the first Black columnist in the newsroom’s 122-year history.

Since August 2020, she has been a culture columnist covering Houston culture, race, parenting and lifestyle topics at Hearst Houston Chronicle/San Francisco Chronicle.

From February 2004 to August 2020, she worked as a fashion editor and writer at the Houston Chronicle.

She also freelanced for People magazine.

Sewing has B.A. in journalism from the University of Houston, where she also served as an adjunct professor.
