What Is Daxxify, and Why Would I Want to Inject It in My Face?

For injectable enthusiasts, one of the downsides of neuromodulators — Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and so on — is that results don’t last as long as many would like. On Thursday, September 8, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Daxxify, a new aesthetic injection to temporarily treat frown lines for longer than its competitors, completely changing the aesthetics game as we know it.

A neuromodulator, for the unacquainted, is a neurotoxin that temporarily limits the injectable site’s range of motion, which can help discourage fine lines and wrinkles from deepening, an effect typically lasting for three to six months. But that timespan — and our appointment schedule — may be about to change, if the newly approved Daxxify has anything to say about it.

Daxxify “can deliver year-long results with as few as two treatments, addressing an unmet need in aesthetics for both physicians and patients by providing long duration,” writes Revance, Daxxify’s parent company, in a statement to Allure. “Daxxify provides patients with the luxury of time allowing them to maximize their time without compromising their results.”

“We are thrilled to add this to our cosmetic portfolio,” adds Jody Comstock, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Skin Spectrum Dermatology Tucson, who is a Revance aesthetics advisor. “Our patients will love the convenience of fewer annual treatments and some new, advanced injection techniques.”

Intrigued? So are we, but, as always, we turned to the experts for a complete breakdown of how (and if) Daxxify is different from all the other injectables in the market.

Meet the experts:

In this story:

What is Daxxify?

Daxxify is a peptide-enhanced injectable that treats glabellar lines, a.k.a. frown lines. Known as daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm, Daxxify contains a peptide exchange technology to deliver the botulinum toxin to the nerve cells so that it temporarily improves moderate to severe lines. Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City, says that it works similarly to other neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau, to block the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract and reduce the appearance of expression lines.

Wait, I thought it was called “Daxi.”

Good memory! It has been referred to as Daxi in the past.

How does it differ from other neuromodulators?

The biggest difference between Daxxify and other neuromodulators is how long the results last. While results will differ depending on the person, Botox, for example, generally lasts anywhere from three to six months. Daxxify is said to last anywhere from six to nine months, which is the first neuromodulator to promise such longevity and promises consumers fewer treatments are needed a year to maintain best results.
