TL;DR

  • Samsung reportedly aims to increase Galaxy S23 series sales by more than 10% over the S22 series.
  • The company also wants to grow foldable phone sales by more than 10% compared to 2022.

Samsung has just launched the Galaxy S23 series, bringing minor hardware upgrades on paper for the most part. Nevertheless, all three phones offer a powerful new processor, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra in particular is bringing a 200MP main camera.

Now, Samsung mobile chief TM Roh has told Korean journalists that the company expects Galaxy S23 series sales to increase by over 10% compared to the S22 series, ET News and Chosun Biz reported. The mobile chief also stated that the same sales goal applies to the firm’s foldable phones in 2023.

“We expect global annual sales volume of both the Galaxy S series and the foldable series to grow by double digits compared to last year,” Roh was quoted as saying, according to machine translation. “The Galaxy S23 series released this time has a challenging goal of growing sales by more than 10%.”

Roh asserted that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is expected to account for more than 50% of the total sales volume, adding that the S22 Ultra accounted for over 40% of total Galaxy S22 series sales volume.

The lofty sales goals for the Galaxy S23 Ultra suggest Samsung is focused more on growing its sales in the ultra-premium flagship space than increasing overall device sales. Then again, the company could simply be anticipating strong Ultra sales due to the aforementioned S22 Ultra performance rather than specifically focusing on this model.

This strategy makes sense at first glance, though, as analysts expect the global smartphone market to decline in 2023. So focusing on the model with the highest profit margin could help the company achieve its financial targets if sales are down across the board.
